The Tall Ships Short Story
The Tall Ships Short Story Trail – which runs alongside Clan’s public art trail, The BookBench Trail – showcases twelve specially designed BookBench sculptures in key city centre and coastal locations around Aberdeen.
Funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, event partners hope the sculptures will provide a unique cultural experience for people of all ages to enjoy during the festival which is expected to attract 400,000 visits and 50 Tall Ships from 19 to 22 July 2025.

She Sells Sea Shells
Artist: Catrina MacKenzie
Location: Aberdeen Science Centre, outside main entrance
The concept for the bench centres around the clan families of the north of Scotland. Clan’s charity focuses on support and community and my design reflects that along with a national pride for Scotland.

The Perfect Getaway
Artist: Charlotte Brayley
Location: Beach - Beach Ballroom
Laughter. Silliness. Sometimes, our lives create feelings that are too serious and we need to be reminded that is good to reclaim our inner child. Shake off that fear…being a grown up is hard BUT in memory of my dear mum Zen, Charlotte has created a positively daft design that also celebrates the most wonderful things all over the North East has to offer. As a frequent tourist Charlotte's taken a snapshot of things she's enjoyed and visited; from castles to coffee shops, independent businesses to county fairs…what’s not to love?

On the Crest of a Wave
Artist: Ewen Milne
Location: Beach - infront of Inoflate
This nautical bookbench invites you to experience the historical charm of the sea. Painted with a stunning seascape of Aberdeen Harbour, it captures tall ships passing the harbour breakwater at sunrise. The waves and reflective surfaces come alive, creating the illusion that you can "sit on the crest of a wave”, providing a perfect spot to relax and let your imagination sail away.

Bucaneers Bench
Artist: Hannah Lewin
Location: Castlegate
'Buccaneer’s Bench’ is inspired by Scotland’s connections with pirates. From William Kidd a 17th-century privateer to Robert Davidson, An innkeeper, and wine merchant who was charged with piracy in 1410, Scotland has a rich maritime history. Pirate boats of all kinds sailed off the Scottish Coast, from Brigantines to Sloops, Schooners to tall Galleon ships. My colourful bench features a Pirate Shipwreck at the bottom of the sea which has become home to all kinds of ocean creatures like fish, crabs and even an octopus! Can you spot the hidden coins and the captains hook?

Dream
Artist: Fiona Chance
Location: Aberdeen Art Gallery - Outside main door
“Dream” is inspired by the famous painting The Great Wave. As we grow up we learn fear lack of control. The image of the big wave symbolises this sense of powerlessness and lack of stability. “Dream” hopes to remind us to dream, create and play no matter what this unpredictable world throws at us.

These Walls Are Alive with Stories
Artist: Heather Millar
Location: Aberdeen Art Gallery - Outside main door
This design highlights how the many castles of the North East have inspired countless stories and legends. These magnificent structures often seem as if they’ve been lifted straight from the pages of a storybook. Through this work, I aim to celebrate the imaginative tales drawn from the rich history and enduring beauty of these remarkable, real-world landmarks.

Sails and Stories
Artist: Ann Falconer
Location: Fittie, beside Silver Darling
‘Sails and Stories’ has 2 sailors sitting on the bench repairing a sail. Sitting performing this time intensive task, these two men might take the opportunity to share thoughts or concerns or just to sit and think for a while. It is also an example of the re-emerging practice of repairing and reusing. The back of the bench brings in the theme of books and reading with a book sculpture of a sailing boat in front of a stack of books waiting to be read.

Have a Rest
Artist: Lena Kibber
Location: Car park at Nigg Bay Golf Club
I chose to have my design resemble a bed. The idea was that many people have a rest on a bench so lets make it look comfortable for them. A large majority read their books in bed so this also added to my inspiration. For emergencies there is a chamber pot under the bed and of course you have to have a teddy for company. the pattern on the duvet and pillows is of shells and seaweed and other life under the sea adorns the backboard of the bed.A touch of the Bedknob and Broomstick!

Journey Awaits
Artist: Rachael and Phillipa Corcutt
Location: Aberdeen Sports Village, in front of the Aquatic centre
Celebrating voyage and discovery, this design is made to look like a seafarers map, complete with compass, anchor and spyglass. Inspired by the journey of the Tall Ships from Aberdeen, this design highlights the route and destinations taken by these famous ships. Sailing from Le Harve and Dunkirk to arriving in the vibrant city of Aberdeen, to making the journey across the North Sea to Norway and Denmark. Also featuring on this design are some wonderful locations on the Orkney and Shetland islands. Evoking a sense of discovery and adventure, this design celebrates all things nautical.
